10 essential tips to improve your paint by numbers skills

Paint by numbers is the perfect way to relax and create something beautiful at the same time. But how do you get the most out of it? In this article we share 10 practical tips especially for adults who want to refine their technique, including clever hacks and tools you can apply straight away.
1. Iron your canvas smooth before you start
Did you order an unstretched canvas? Then iron it carefully on a low temperature (put a tea towel in between) or leave it under a stack of books for a while. That way you will be working on a tight surface, which is much nicer to paint on.
2. Start at the top left (or bottom right for left-handers)

3. Blending? Definitely do it!
Dare to deviate a little from the lines. A slight overlap or colour transition gives a softer, more natural result. Especially with portraits or landscapes this gives a beautiful depth effect.
4. Always click the paint pots firmly shut
Dried-out paint is a waste! Make sure you hear the lids of the pots ‘click’. Has the paint become a little too thick anyway? Then add a drop of water or Flow Improver and stir well.

5. Bothered by numbers showing through light colours?
Then first use a thin layer of light grey acrylic paint before you apply the right colour. This prevents show-through and gives an even end result.
6. Use brushes in different sizes
Not every section is the same. Small details call for a thin brush, while you paint larger areas faster with a wider brush.

7. Keep leftover paint
Do not throw everything away! The leftover paint is ideal for touching up or for future paintings. Label the pots if you like, so you know which colour belongs to which painting.

8. Take good care of your brushes
Rinse your brushes with lukewarm water after each use and dry them flat on kitchen paper. That way the bristles keep their shape and you can use them for longer.
